Persepolis

Marjane’s grandmother: “Listen. I don’t like to preach, but here’s some advice. You’ll meet a lot of jerks in life. If they hurt you, remember it’s because they’re stupid. Don’t react to their cruelty. There’s nothing worse than bitterness and revenge. Keep your dignity and be true to yourself.”

God’s Stone Quarry

by dev on Apr.28, 2009, under Documentary

In the search for the best way to reveal the social struggles in Northern Bohemia, a land cursed with open pit coal mines, this film unintentionally goes further and stops half-way to discovering the “root of all evil”: man himself. It’s amazing to see how people open their heart in front of the camera. I loved the eloquent discourses held by all characters, the simplicity of their philosophy, emerging from real life experience.

Black Hearts (…the Earth is not round)

by dev on Apr.27, 2009, under Documentary

It’s hard to describe the mixture of feelings awakened by Bretislav Rychliks’ movie “Black Hearts (…the Earth is not round)”. This documentary sweeps us through the lives of four Gypsy families from different backgrounds: Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia, some in utter poverty, others surrounded by riches, giving a glimpse of their way of live, full of energy, music, love and contradictions. One of the most crucial things I could not understand in this movie is how does the wildly gesticulated faith in the Christian God of some people relate itself to breaking one of the ten commandments that should, at least in theory, forbade them for stealing! It was shocking to see how tenderly they cared for a stolen(!) statue of Virgin Mary :)

But… who am I to judge. After all, “if it disturbs you, it’s art”.

“With the documentary Ca La Moldova, EXPAT Pictures has created a snapshot of life in the Republic of Moldova. Through brilliant photography and compelling interviews, Ca La Moldova explores the present day challenges the country faces set against the backdrop of the rich cultural history of the land formerly known as Bessarabia. Ca La Moldova tracks Moldova’s transition from a Soviet Republic to an independent state, through the economic turmoil and uncertainty of the 1990s, to the election of a Communist government in 2001, to the present day issues of emigration, corruption, language, and the tensions that exist between ethnic Romanians and Russians.”

Religulous

by dev on Mar.08, 2009, under Documentary

After seeing this movie I’m not exactly thrilled about the way I’ve spent my last hour and a half, given the narrow-mindedness of pretty much everyone interviewed. It’s amazing to see how we people hold in ourselves so much ignorance, hypocrisy, hate, self-indulgence and fear of cerebral debates that might shatter our false beliefs especially when dealing with words like God, Jesus or Muhammad, Apocalypse, Virgin Mary, Holly Book whether Bible or Qur’an, or anything alike related to Religion. I guess when one believes, one doesn’t think.
